As I sit in my office writing and gazing thoughtfully out the window (channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw), I find myself reflecting on the beautifully chaotic week coming to a close. It’s been one of those weeks where you laugh, cry, question all your life choices, and then dramatically collapse into bed as if you’ve just completed an emotional marathon… without training.
My vertigo has decided to make several surprise guest appearances, popping in and out like an uninvited house guest who refuses to commit to staying or leaving. One minute I’m fine, the next I’m holding onto furniture like I’m riding out rough seas in my own living room.
But honestly, I’m grateful for all of it — the highs, the lows, and the slightly dizzy in-betweens. Feeling all the feelings reminds me that I’m fully alive, even if sometimes I’d prefer to experience life while sitting perfectly still.
These are my Favorite Five for the last week of March….
A Student Drawing – As retirement creeps closer, I’m feeling equal parts excitement and “wait… am I ready for this?!” I’m really going to miss my coworkers—and the kids’ art, which is basically priceless. On Monday, a first grader drew me in my outfit and gave me a full presentation explaining every detail so I wouldn’t “get confused.” (Confusion seems to be a theme lately in my retirement age.) Honestly, it was the most accurate portrait I’ve had in years. Move over, boring professional artists. We have a budding artist with sass!

My Last Field Day – This week was my final field day ever. Field day and I have never exactly been best friends (too much chaos, not enough heels), but I did enjoy actually talking with students instead of refereeing organized art-class mayhem. I also had two coffees from my beloved Milltown Java… which somehow turned into four total coffees for the morning. At one point, I felt like I could run a marathon. Then, I remembered that I can’t run marathons in heels. I also can’t drink four coffees in a half-day span.

Dad’s Birthday – We celebrated my sweet Dad’s 83rd birthday. We went out to dinner and then came home for not one, but TWO cakes, because clearly dessert moderation is not this family’s strong point. I made my usual upside-down pineapple cake—my “easy” go-to recipe—if you don’t count the incident where I spilled the sticky pineapple juice down the side of my cabinets and onto the floor. Cleaning all of that up was not part of the easy recipe. You can find the recipe linked here.

Bunny Glasses – Wednesday, I showed up to teach my art class at Hinnant Vineyards… and absolutely no one showed up. Not a single soul. It was just me, my glass of wine, and my supplies having a quiet moment together. Slightly humbling, to say the least. BUT when I got home, my Walmart Easter bunny glasses had arrived—and they were fabulous. Way better than expected! Honestly, they’re giving serious Lilly Pulitzer vibes! Shop them here before they sell out!

Yes, I’ve gotten a few comments about my “partnership” with Walmart, but overall, people have been super supportive—and rightfully so, because Walmart has seriously stepped up its fashion game. I’m all about mixing high-end pieces with budget-friendly finds. Since my divorce, I’ve become hyper-conscious of my budget. I want to splurge only on things I collect or truly love. Please check out my Walmart Storefront to see my favorites. I’m constantly adding new fantastic things as I find them.

My First Iris – My first blooming iris showed up this week in all of its purple glory… and then brought all its friends. I love spring—everything is green, fresh, and beautiful… except for the layer of pollen covering literally everything I own. During spring break, I’m planning a few yard upgrades: new fence lights (the old ones that gave me two solid years) and ONE high-quality umbrella instead of my usual four that fade faster than my patience on field day. I’m finally committing to a Sunbrella—because growth isn’t just emotional, it’s patio-related too. This is the umbrella I plan to purchase from Amazon. It’s on sale right now! After much searching, this one won my heart based on reviews and price. I think we will have a winner!
