On Sunday, we woke up to the most beautiful blanket of snow. Everything looked clean and peaceful beneath its soft covering. The snow forced life to slow down and offered a much-needed pause to reset. I used my snow days to catch up on house chores and my art. I made a few Valentine’s earrings. I did a little cooking and a lot of snacking. I took long, hot showers by candlelight. I went on invigorating walks through the woods and breathed in the fresh, clean air.
On one of those long walks, I remembered something. Many years ago, I had written a blog post about the snow. Rereading it made me nostalgic and reflective about the different winters of my life.
Winter has never been my favorite season. But in what is often considered a long, cold, and dark time of year, I’ve found value.

Value in Rest
Just as in nature, it’s important to rest. In life, we often find ourselves caught in a constant cycle of striving. We set schedules that are too demanding for shorter days, leaving us exhausted. Just as plants and trees rest in winter and animals hibernate, we also need rest. Slowing down isn’t the opposite of progress — it’s part of it.
During winter, I make sure to go to bed earlier. I give myself permission to leave some items on my to-do list unfinished. I develop a more restful routine that supports self-care. Rest renews both our spirits and our bodies.

Value in Reflection and Resetting
Slowing down allows us to find gratitude in our lives. One of my favorite winter rituals is sipping coffee by the fire while journaling. With fewer distractions, this season becomes a time to learn about myself and prepare for my growth season ahead.
Winter invites honesty and clarity. In this, I have become more intentional. I’ve even reset my goals as I’ve learned more about myself. Fireside coffee and journaling was once reserved for quiet winter weekends. Now, it has become part of my daily life. I value this time so much that I set my alarm 30 minutes earlier each morning to indulge. By going to bed earlier, I don’t mind waking up early to reset my day and my mindset. Reflection and resetting create gratitude, helping us become better versions of ourselves.

Value in Resilience
Winter teaches patience. For those of us who love warmth and sunlight, the days can feel dark and heavy. For me, after the holiday high fades, January and February can seem a little mundane. I stress about paying off holiday debt and worry over gas and heating bills that stretch my budget. I dread pulling on a heavy coat and climbing into an ice-cold car.
But winter reminds us that seasons don’t last forever. The stress and heaviness always pass. Life continues, and difficult seasons prepare us for what comes next. Resilience helps us grow stronger.

What Winter Keeps Teaching Me
In the end, winter isn’t just a season outside our window. It’s a reminder that life moves in cycles. There are times for blooming, times for harvesting, and times for resting and waiting. Winter teaches me that all the seasons of life matter.
